My titles rarely relate to my actual posts...
Pt. 1
Sitting in one of my kids' reading classes being ever so grateful to his first grade teacher, Mrs. Shoaf. She may have been "hard" according to the students, but those whose parents were supportive show great improvement in their reading skills since the Fall of 09.
I don't want to be one of those parents who is over involved, but my kids do ask me to be in the class and we (parents) are welcome to sit in and I like to learn new teaching skills for helping the rest of my kids. At least I am not sitting right next to him, holding his hand the whole way.
This boy is not really a clingy kid, unlike his older brother, but I am happy he wants me here. He's the toughest of the crew, so far, and it is nice he wants to be close to me. I long for my kids, their attention and the opportunity to teach them, as well as the opportunity to make fun memories for them - and me!
Well, this weekend we are having a swim party for my daughter - turning 5 - and then I will be taking my oldest to his last summer cub scout camp ever. This will be fun, especially since we will be in our own tents; he LOVES camping.
Pt. 2
Now in the lobby waiting for my oldest's reading class to be done - I have quite a bit of a wait.
He wanted me to stay (this is the clingy one) but I explained I had a couple of errands to run so we could go bowling this afternoon. He understood, but still wanted me to stay or have him go with me. I told him I would be back, which I am, but I really don't want to go into the classroom. Sometimes I am a distraction to him as well, only because he knows I am there. I wish I could have a spy cam to notice how he is doing when I am not there.
Last week, I was in the class and he did well. He wouldn't participate and leave his pencil down when the teacher was talking, but at least he was doing work and reading. Sometimes he is so focused on getting things done right away that he doesn't pay attention to the lesson or the teacher. I think that is partially our (his mom and I) fault. I know I am usually saying, "Hurry son, get it done so we can do this other stuff," or, "Get it done now, so you don't have to do it later." Oh the balance of teaching, huh?
I have been thinking about how I don't really know exactly what he would like to do, with me, that is. I know if I said, "We're gonna do this," he would probably argue a bit about not wanting to go, but he would enjoy whatever it is and do it. I just wish he would tell me exactly what he would like to do. I know what he is interested in: Art, Math, Science, to name a few, but I sometimes wish he would know what he wanted to do when I ask.
I am pretty impatient and worrisome at times when it comes to brining up kids, but with God's grace, I hope to follow Luke 6:36 "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."
Well, I guess I will go in there for the last half of the class.
Pray for nice weather, although, I like thunderstorms, even when camping... just as long as it clears up enough for us to do some things.
